County Sheriff: Marty Arganbright

The County’s principal peace officer is the Guthrie County Sheriff, who is elected every four years. Currently, the Sheriff is Marty Arganbright. The Sheriff and the Sheriff’s Deputies are the police force for residents of the unincorporated areas of the county.

The Sheriff’s Office handles all routine and emergency calls for these areas, and regularly patrols all areas of the county. The Sheriff’s Office also posts all Sheriff Sales, issues permits to purchase and carry firearms and houses the Guthrie County Jail.

The County Sheriff’s Office is located at 200 North 5th Street, Guthrie Center, Iowa. The office can be contacted via phone (641) 747-2214 and via fax (641) 747-3346. The office is open 24 hours every day.

Jail Visitation hours: Thursdays 2-3:30 pm, unless a holiday.

Application Permit to Acquire (Permit to purchase a firearm) – Info sheet
– Provide the form to Sheriff with Color Photo ID, such as a driver’s license.
– The address on Photo ID must match the address on the application. If it does not, please provide some type of proof of residency in Guthrie County, such as a utility bill, vehicle registration, insurance card, etc.
– Fee is $ 25.00 for regular 5-yr permit; $ 15.00 for duplicate.  Payment is by cash, check or card via GovPayNet.

Application Permit to Carry – New/Renewal/Duplicate (Permit that allows one to carry a firearm openly or concealed and/or to purchase a firearm) – Info sheet
– Provide the form to Sheriff with Color Photo ID, such as a driver’s license and proof of certification of training from certified instructor from DPS or NRA or military (i.e., DD-214, general or honorable discharge, etc).
– The address on Photo ID must match the address on the application. If it does not, please provide some type of proof of residency in Guthrie County, such as a utility bill, vehicle registration, insurance card, etc.
– Fee is $ 50.00 for new; $ 25.00 for renewal or duplicate.  Payment is by cash, check or card via GovPayNet.

Payment for either application can be made via GovPayNet or by leaving the application and payment in the drop box located outside the courthouse.
