Full-Time Park Ranger

Guthrie County is seeking a full-time position under the general supervision of the Guthrie County Conservation Director.

Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of mechanical, plumbing and carpentry skills; general park grounds and facilities maintenance skill, knowledge of proper safety and procedures/occupational hazards associated with maintenance/repairs of buildings and grounds.  Ability to safely operate equipment such as power tools, tractors, weed eaters, chainsaws, backhoe, skid steer, trucks and the ability to perform strenuous physical labor.  Ability to resolve disputes/conflicts with the use of diplomacy, tact and persuasion; effective communication skills and the ability to use discretion and independent judgement.


Primary responsibilities include the general maintenance, improvements, supervision, and management of Nations Bridge Park and other natural resource areas as assigned.  The Park Ranger is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of equipment, buildings, roads, grounds, wildlife habitat improvements, tree planting and care, prairie management, and pesticide application.  Special duties include overseeing the operation of the campgrounds, buildings, trails, and shelter rentals.  This position is also responsible for providing park security, enforcing Guthrie County Conservation Board rules and regulations, and promoting good public relations.


Bachelor’s or Associate degree from an accredited college or university with a major course work in Park Management, Natural Resources, Outdoor Recreations, or a related field is preferred.  Work experience in conservation, park management, or other fields may also be considered in addition to, or in place of, a college degree.

Iowa Public Pesticide Applicators’ License (Category 6) or ability to obtain within 4 months of hire

Certified Hunter Education Instructor or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

CDL Class A License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire

Must be able to pass a background check, standard pre-employment physical, and drug screening.

ILEA certification is not required, but preference may be shown if certified

Hours and Benefits

Non-standard work week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Salary commensurate with experience $42,000 to $47,000 yearly with a 6 month probationary period.

Residency in provided housing is required at Nations Bridge Park.  Electric and propane paid by employee, water and trash by County.
